We caught up with Zorbas Trio and had a great little chat. Come pull up a cup of coffee.

RRX: Every comic book hero has an origin story. What is your origin story? (points if you tell it like a comic book origin.)

ZT: Being able to create music and being able to understand and know your instrument is like having a super power! This particular super power makes people inspired, tap their feet, dance, sing, and even cry.

We, the Zorbas Trio are siblings, and being homeschooled and also being raised by our parents who themselves are musicians/artists, music and art came naturally to us. We have had much guidance and freedom to do what we love and we are very grateful for our “super powers”.

RRX: Every artist’s first song is a milestone. But so is the latest song. Describe the first song/album you recorded, and also the latest song/album you recorded; what are the differences?

ZT: Our single “Still I Breathe” is our first recorded original. People have described it as a dark western, which we never considered, but it seems to fit.

We all collaborated on the music and lyrics with this song. It was during a tough time for our family, and the music and lyrics reflect our feelings. One great thing about writing music together as siblings, is that our past, present, and future is and will be intertwined in a way that only we experience.

The latest song we are working on recording right now is, ‘ Sundaes.” It has a different feel than “Still I Breathe”. It doesn’t have a dark feel to it musically, but the lyrics written by our sister Demetra, it definitely has references to the fickle and darkish side of friendships.

Being in our studio and recording is very exciting, stressful, frustrating, fun, and finally exhilarating when it is finished.John our brother (youngest of the trio) is our main recording engineer. We are looking forward to releasing our first album later this year.

RRX: Like songs, every artist has a unique feeling about their first show. What was your first show like? Was it your best show? If not, what was your best show like?

ZT: Our first show was very different compared to how our shows go now. Our band consisted originally of just vocals and keyboard. We started out very young, and we did have a lot of fun on our first time playing out as a band, but we have certainly grown a whole lot more musically since then.

Our best show, that we all agree upon, was at the Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls just last fall. It is a sizable stage, there is a gorgeous Steinway grand piano (that John would love to take home lol), fabulous lighting, and it was just us three doing what we love. We can say though that the best part of the show was the audience. There were tears, there was joy and we moved people in a way only music can do.

RRX: Music genres are difficult for some artists. Some strictly adhere; others not so much. What is your perspective on the genre you play, or the genres you hover around?

ZT: Honestly, we love to explore all types of genres. We love to play music from rock to jazz, to classical to old western, to even traditional Greek folk music!

We can’t exactly put a label on our music, that kinda has to come from the outside because to us, we are our music.

RRX: It’s a lot of fun living in the present, but we all collect memories and give birth to dreams. We’re talking dreams here. Where you see yourself next year? In the next five years?

ZT: We hope to see ourselves with more albums, continuing to make and bring our art into our world for everyone to hear and enjoy.

RRX: We all get a little support from those around us. And we also can be impressed by our fellow performers. Who do you admire in your community, and why?

ZT: We  love to watch local music live, and we stream it on YouTube, (if we can’t get to the venue). Seeing other musicians on stage doing the things we love is inspiration in itself. All of us work at the Sunday farmers market in Saratoga and we love watching and talking with all the musicians that perform at the Spa City Farmers’ Market during the summer.  We all personally agree that seeing local musicians perform original music is much more interesting and enjoyable than the real huge acts that come into town. Plus,the local musician needs and appreciates our support much more!
