In the heart of the 518, a tight-knit community recently came together for a cause that resonated with their collective love for music and compassion for a dear friend.
James Magilton, a once prominent figure in the local music scene, had relocated to South Carolina but found himself facing a daunting battle with undiagnosed health issues. Without health insurance, the mounting medical bills became a barrier to the care he urgently needed.
The rallying cry for support was answered with resounding enthusiasm as the community organized a fundraiser – “Jammin for Jimmy.” The event aimed not only to raise funds but also to celebrate the spirit of camaraderie that defined James’s impact on the local scene.
James, known for his extraordinary guitar skills and infectious positivity, had touched the lives of many. His music had become a cultural cornerstone, and now it was time for the community to give back. The outpouring of support was nothing short of remarkable.
The fundraiser, hosted at Wicked Eatery Pub and Entertainment, exceeded all expectations. Over $7,500 was raised through a GoFundMe campaign, as well as the many, many donations of raffle prizes, and entry fees, showcasing the generosity and solidarity of the 518. The success of the event was a testament to the power of a community united by a common cause.
The list of individuals and businesses that contributed to the event is extensive, reflecting the widespread support for James. From local music stores like Parkway Music and Alan Payette Music Traders to national chains like Guitar Center and Walmart, the community pulled together resources to make a difference. The generosity extended beyond monetary donations, with businesses like Mohawk Taproom & Grill, Unified Beerworks, and Tipsy Moose Tavern, Frog Alley Brewing, Proctor’s Theater, Pereccas, Holiday Inn-Saratoga Springs, 15 Church, Alderbrook Lodge, Empire Live Albany ,Brick By Brick, Nino Minissale, and Vixen (yes, THE Vixen), Hannaford Supermarkets, Price Chopper Supermarkets, Ray-Ban, Otis and Oliver’s, DeCrescente Distributing Company, and of course Tim Berlin and the entire staff at Wicked Eatery Pub and Entertainment for allowing us to take over for the day, contributing to the event’s success.
A special mention goes to those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring the smooth running of the fundraiser. Valarie Polak, a primary source of gathering donations for raffles, as well as Jay Rodges, who not only helped gather the raffle prizes, but did so much behind the scenes work at the event!
And, we can’t forget Chris Toma, who came up with the name of the event; Michelle Knight, Tammy August-Schmid, and Michelle Nocian played crucial roles in obtaining, organizing, and running the donation table. Rich Palleja managed the door and donation collections, Randy Decker running lights and Ryan Nilsen on sound, while Stephanie J Bartik of NY Rockstar Photographer, captured the entire day through her lens.
The musical line-up featured bands like LV2, The Schmooze, Sugar Pill, The Flannel Kings, Tommy V Live, along with many prominent area musicians such as Ryan Nilsen, Tim Candlen, Bill Johnson, Patrick MacGloin, Kevin Brandow, Dave Messick, Thomas “The Falsetto Falcon” Skiff. The event also saw the participation of local businesses, and individuals who contributed in various capacities, making the day a grand success.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Ed Knight, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing everything together. His dedication and commitment ensured that the event unfolded seamlessly, creating a space where the community could rally for a shared cause.
Most importantly, the organizers expressed gratitude to everyone who attended the event, donated time, money, or contributed in any way. The collective effort was a testament to the strength of community bonds and the willingness to support a friend in need.
As the fundraiser concluded, a message of love and solidarity was directed towards James Magilton. The community, through their actions, wanted him to know that he was not alone in his battle. The GoFundMe page continues to accept donations, emphasizing that the spirit of Jammin’ for Jimmy extends beyond a single event – it is an ongoing journey of support, compassion, and shared humanity.
